— JOSEPH J. FLUDER, III, CEO
Because our goal is to see all of our employees go home safely and in good health at the end of the day, we have created a robust Safety Program based on proactive measures to prevent accidents as well as to ensure a positive outcome if a safety incident does occur. We encourage our employees to be stewards of safety, and we provide continual education and ongoing communication on the importance of safety.
Thanks to our company-wide commitment to safety, SWCA has some of the best safety ratings in the industry.

Remote Vehicle Rescue
While out on a survey, an SWCA crew assisted getting a vehicle unstuck from a high-centered sand situation on a remote road. One of our staff members spent several hours driving to the incident location and gathered all the needed field supplies to help get our field crew back on the road. The crew spent several hours digging the vehicle out of the sand to relocate the vehicle and ensure it could be used for the following day’s surveys. The crew showed exemplary safety recognition in reporting the situation, remaining calm and professional throughout the incident and followed their safety training accordingly.

"Do you have a fire extinguisher?"
On a remote survey, a person ran up to ask our crew “Do you have a fire extinguisher?” The crew responded immediately to a truck on fire on the side of a dirt road in the forest, directly next to dry vegetation. This vegetation extended to a busy campground at max capacity for the weekend. Several campers in the area were standing, watching, while one was throwing water onto the engine of the burning truck. Due to the field crew completing their safety trainings, they immediately recognized that water on burning diesel was the incorrect way to approach this fire and grabbed the fire extinguisher and shovel from their truck.

Wildfire Watch
While surveying in a forested area an SWCA crew noticed a wildfire near their project. They immediately notified the Project Manager (PM) who got in contact with the local Office Safety Representative (OSR) to research the status of the wildfires in the area. The PM and OSR were notified that the crew hadn’t seen any smoke that morning when they got to the project site but could now see flames on nearby hillside. This prompted the likelihood of a new fire, not the mostly contained fire that was actively managed in the area. As this coordination between the crew, PM, and OSR was happening, the crew was notified by local authority of a suspected arsonist in the area with 2-3 new wildfires reported that day.
