Congratulations to Joshua Bailey, Senior Data Scientist, out of our Raleigh-Durham office, on being named the Lawrence S. Semo Scientific Achievement award winner for the second quarter of 2024.

Since joining SWCA in 2019, Joshua has exemplified the company’s Core Values through his innovative spirit and dedication to leveraging science and technology for environmental stewardship. His expertise in GeoAI has revolutionized how SWCA tackles environmental challenges and has expanded service offerings for clients. His relentless pursuit of collaboration, creativity, and performance enhances SWCA’s ability to deliver sound science and creative solutions through AI technology and to solve complex problems using large language models. #OneSWCA

SCIENTIFIC EXCELLENCE AND LEADERSHIP

Joshua’s academic journey began in information technology and data science, but his passion for the environment and earth observation paved the way for his influential role at SWCA. His education in environmental studies revealed that data science, artificial intelligence, programming, and automation can be used to collect and analyze environmental data. “These tools combined allow us to tackle complex environmental challenges like climate change and habitat degradation,” Joshua says.

A recognized innovator behind SWCA’s internal artificial intelligence platform, SpotBot, Joshua has positioned SWCA as an early adopter of advanced technologies, meeting societal demands and seizing opportunities for SWCA to be an innovator and early adopter.

A career highlight for Joshua is his collaborative work with the Nantucket Conservation Foundation. #GivesBack. He addressed an invasive species of Phragmites, which threatens local ponds and lakes, by utilizing drone and satellite imagery coupled with machine learning. This advanced approach ensured successful conservation efforts while reducing labor-intensive fieldwork. Joshua’s dedication to integrating cutting-edge technology into conservation projects underscores his leadership and expertise. #NeverSettle (Shout-out to Naomi Valentine, Senior Ecological Restoration Team Lead from the Amherst office).

“What’s particularly cool about this project is the substantial field effort involved. We use drone or satellite imagery to train a machine learning model, collect the imagery, run it through the model, and get a calculation and map of where the Phragmites are,” Joshua explains. “Plus, the Data Science team shares important technical findings with the larger community dedicated to environment data science. We consider this a big part of our Spreading the Science philosophy. We conduct research, read academic papers, apply the latest techniques to our work, and do our best to give back by contributing what we can. While we keep some of the secret sauce, is great for ideation and applying cutting-edge methods.”

TEAM BUILDING

After transitioning to the GIS team, Joshua helped establish SWCA’s Data Science team, which he now leads. This team has developed services that leverage advanced technologies to meet client needs.

One of Joshua’s significant achievements is the development and deployment of SWCA’s SpotBot. More than five hundred employees have engaged with the platform, generating thousands of conversations each month, demonstrating widespread team adoption and utilization. Beyond his scientific contributions, Joshua values the connections he establishes at SWCA. “The science leadership program has connected me with amazing scientists within SWCA. Through these connections, I learn about the incredible work we do and contribute my skills to unique and exciting projects,” Joshua shares.

Locke Brillhart notes, “Through Josh’s achievements, he has embodied SWCA’s dedication to performance, delivering results that advance our understanding and capabilities in environmental science.”

Joshua advises those pursuing a technical career to always seek opportunities beyond their skill set and to learn from team members who have those skills. Doing so benefits everyone involved. If it is something you are passionate about, you will have everyone’s support. #AlwaysLearning

The quarterly Lawrence S. Semo Scientific Achievement Award rewards individuals for demonstrating passion, creativity, and scientific excellence in a manner that advances SWCA’s purpose, mission, vision, and values. The award is in honor of Larry Semo, who began working as a biologist for SWCA in Austin in 1993 and transferred to Denver in 1999. A respected and widely published ornithologist and all-around naturalist, Larry had an insatiable desire to learn and a great love for the outdoors until his untimely passing in 2011.
