Environmental Footprint Baseline Assessment, Banco Popular de Puerto Rico
San Juan, Puerto Rico

SWCA Environmental Performance Group (SWCA EPG) performed a baseline carbon inventory assessment for Banco Popular, a $50 billion market capitalized financial institution with over 190 branch locations. This baseline assessment included an SWCA EPG environmental analysis of Banco Popular’s carbon footprint, an assessment of the bank’s current green practices and eco-efficiencies, an analysis of current market trends and competitor actions related to carbon, and the necessary tools to communicate the bank’s progress in reducing impacts against its baseline. This is believed to be the first carbon inventory of a Puerto Rican bank. Specific tasks that were performed include:

  • consultation regarding inventory boundary selection
  • development of a customized data collection questionnaire that was used by the bank’s various departments
  • data collection assistance and data management
  • carbon inventory analysis following the ISO 14064-1 standard
  • market research into carbon management best practices in the marketplace
  • recommendations for an inventory management plan
